Ford getting serious of entry-level compact car

Ford is getting very serious about the entry-level compact cars segment which has been witnessing higher growth in the wake of rising fuel prices and higher tough economic conditions.

Ford which has been in the Indian market for more than 15 years, saw real success only after the launch of the small Figo in 2010. Looking at this success, Ford is mulling to launch a car under the Figo and also a car above the Figo. The Sub-Figo could be pitted against the Alto K10, Hyundai Santro, Eon and Chevrolet Spark. Ford may consider building the car on a global platform and may tweak an existing platform to build a smaller hatch.

The Fiesta hatch is most likely to be launched and will be positioned above the Figo in the Maruti Swift, VW Polo, Honda Jazz and Hyundai i20 segment. Pricing and feature list will be the biggest distinguishing features. To beat the segment leader Swift will be a challenge for the American car maker. (Ford Fiesta hatch caught testing in India)

Ford will be launching the face lifted Figo soon in the Indian market.

Ford will inaugurate its new Gujarat plant in 2014 which will help the company to gain traction in India as it will be able to add new models to its line-up. The company can currently produce 2 lakh vehicles and 3.4 lakh engines at its Chennai plant. Gujarat will give it further 2.4 vehicles and 2.7 lakh engines. The fresh capacity will enable Ford to roll out at least six more new models by mid-decade.
