Forts of Goa – Chandor Fort

Nothing remains now of what was probably Goa’s earliest fort, at its first capital Chandrapura –now Chandor.

Used as a base by the Bhojas as early as the 4th – 5th centuries AD, the whole village of Chandor was once probably enclosed in fortified walls. Only one such wall, made of mud and stone, was extant in 2001, when the Archaeological Survey of India began investigating the history of Chandor.

Today, however, the most visible remnant Chandor’s ancient past is the ruined compound of a Shiva temple.
