Chinese truck maker Beiqi Foton to enter India

Chinese truck Beiqi Foton plans to enter India to tap the growing CV market which currently is dominated by Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland and Eicher. Foton mainly sells trucks in the low-to-mid range price levels known as the Forland series. China’s largest commercial vehicle maker, Beiqi Foton Motor Co, is looking to directly enter the Indian market by soon building a factory in Pune.

Foton is in talks with the Maharashtra government for procuring land in Pune to build a factory to manufacture light trucks, heavy trucks and buses. The first Foton vehicles on the roads would be low-floor buses mainly aimed at supplying under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme, the persons said.

Foton is also on the lookout for an Indian managing director, a decision on which is likely to be taken by May this year. Foton mainly sells trucks in the low-to-mid range price levels, known as the Forland series, which account for close to 80 per cent of the company’s total sales in China. It has operations in 37 countries.

Foton would be the second Chinese auto company to enter the Indian market after Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation (SAIC), which acquired 50 per cent stake in General Motors India earlier this year. The first product from the SAIC stable, a light commercial vehicle, is expected to roll out from GM’ factory in Halol, Gujarat, during the first quarter of 2011.

  2. Welcome Beiqi Foton,
People always welcome a new & a change for the better. More the competition – better will be quality & service. Well, I am a channel partner (service station) for one of the leading manufacturers & can really feel the pressure asserted on them. They should also be innovative & a policy change is a must. The company should keep a check also on the profitability of their channel partners & not just on expansion.

  3. Basically The entry in India with Bus is due to emerging emission norms, proven design in Delhi & good visibility. This entry can hot up the competition which is likely to be neck to neck in coming days. The truck , Tipper & long haul trailer market is already picked up & yet to a long way.

Of course the fittest of all will survive.
