Maruti Suzuki will soon launch a new small car with a 1 litre engine. The launch is expected by July or early August and will sport a KB Series engine. The car is likely to be priced in the range of Rs 2.75-3.25 lakh.
Currently there is a big void between 2.75 -3.25 lakh price and not many choices are offered in this segment. The cars in this segment are Hyundai Santro and Chevrolet Spark. Maruti’s next car Wagon-R just starts around the 3.3 lakh mark.
Certainly there seems to be a great opportunity in this price segment especially those who want to upgrade from Alto, M800 or second hand car who are price conscious.
According to sources Tata is also developing a car in this segment code named Dolphin and is expected to hit the markets by 2011. Hyundai, Chevrolet are also planning to launch more model in this segment. Maruti will get the advantage which will only add to the growing sales of Maruti cars.
Maruti, the largest small car manufacturer in the country with over 50% market share hopes that this car will fit in between the Alto and the Spark, the two small cars in the lower end of the equilibrium. The new car is expected to pre-position or replace the Alto as far as the numbers are concerned.
